1. Learn what birds are normally seen in your area. Some birds come at different times of the year.

2. Decide the best place to install your new bird feeder: in a tree, on a hook, on a pole or some other device. Remember to make it easy for the birds to get at, but also easy for you to remove for cleaning and refilling.

3. Choose the correct feeder. You may want more than one:

1. A tube feeder with large holes or a hopper feeder for large seeds. Make sure the feed port holes will accommodate large seeds, nuts and fruit.
2. A tube feeder for finches with small holes. It may be easier to use a Finch Sock feeder.
3. A wire mesh feeder for woodpeckers.
4. Suet baskets.
5. Hummingbird feeders.

Some birds, like Cardinals, Thrushes and others, prefer to eat off the ground or from a platform feeder. These birds often prefer to feed close to brush or trees for safety. Finches will come to feeders regardless of their location.

If birds don’t come to your feeder right away, be patient. You may also have to relocate your feeder.
